When it was approved in 2006, the Atlantic Yards project was the largest single-source development project in City history. In the six years since, that distinction has turned into a liability for the public, as Forest City Ratner Companies has distanced itself from commitments it made to win project approval.

• In September of 2010, FCRC CEO Bruce Ratner stated that it was never his company’s intention to complete Atlantic Yards in ten years.
• In November of 2011, Mr. Ratner told the Wall Street Journal that it he could not build high rise affordable units using union labor with existing subsidy programs.

Good jobs and affordable housing for Brooklynites are too important to be held hostage by the whims of a single developer. If Forest City won't deliver on its promises, it's time to find other developers who will. A new plan must protect the public’s interests by including multiple firms and a fair and transparent contracting process.
